The photographic work MenMachine documents two contrasting conditions of architectural production: the traditional construction of buildings through manual labour, often performed by marginalised construction workers, is documented in a series of portrait photographs, while the highly technologised production of entire houses is depicted through photographs of a fully automated assembly line utilising robotics. The juxtaposition of these two visual documents raises questions about the current state of the construction industry and its future. These include the precarious working conditions under which architecture is made, questions of participation and authorship, the gradual automation of labour, and the subsequent displacement of traditional professions, from construction workers to architects.
